Become a Book Review Blogger

Many friends have asked me how to become a book review blogger. Below you’ll find resources to help you connect with publisher blogging programs. Before you jump in, I’d like to explain the general concept behind blogging for books.

I was introduced to the program through my membership with Christian Work at Home Moms (CWAHM).  I received an email request asking for people to participate in a blog book tour for a new Christian book. Since I enjoy reading and wanted to explore Christian books, I agreed to participate in the event.

From that experience, I discovered a passion for reading and writing book reviews. Soon I was approached by other publishers, authors and even Christian musicians asking if i would review their products. I had great success blogging for LifeVerse® Jewelry, with many of our jewelry sales coming from this blog. I was leading a womens bible study online, at the Womens Bible Cafe, with many visitors each month. Blogging for books was a natural fit for something I was already passionate about: Christianity and spiritual growth.

Book review blogging is not a “free ride” and should be given respect and professionalism it  deserves. You’ll need to read the publisher requirements before agreeing to participate. You’ll need to finish the book and post your review on specific dates. You need to respect the copyright laws of the authors. Most importantly, you need to be honest with your readers. Don’t tell readers a book is great, for the purpose of getting free books from the publishers. Tell the truth, even when you don’t like the book. Controversy is good advertising for the publisher as much as the raving reviews are.

Benefits to Blogger Book Reviews

  • Free books or music
  • Encourages you to read more
  • Role model reading to your children
  • Exposure to authors you’re unfamiliar with
  • Pre-releases from authors you enjoy
  • Enjoy discussions with other book reviewers

Disadvantages of Blogger Book Reviews

  • Not compensated for your time
  • Negative criticism from other book review bloggers
  • Must meet publisher timelines
  • Pressure to finish a book you do not like
  • Writing the review takes time and effort

During my blogger book review experience, I have enjoyed watching my 8-year-old daughter sit beside me and read her own books. We’re doing something together that does not involve television or electronic games. By the way, she is now reading at the 6th grade level and she is in 2nd grade. My older daughter (age 11) has started reading the books and wants to start her own book review blog.
