Shades of Blue by Karen Kingsbury-Book Review
Shades of Blue by Karen Kingsbury, author of Life-Changing Fiction, is worthy of any bestseller list. Kingsbury writes with courage as she takes on the silence of those men and women haunted by their past. In this novel, the main character, Brad, demonstrates a male perspective of how decisions made in his youth impacted his adult life. We journey with Brad as he seeks resolution from his decision and heals his past. He reveals his shame to people he can trust and he discovers the effects of living in silence for so many years. In this beautiful story, “his past remained buried in the very deepest basement of his soul and he never figured out a way to talk about it” (page 59).
Other characters in the story include his former girlfriend Emma, his fiancé Laura, his parents and his prospective in-laws. Each character brings a different perspective to the story, revealing how one decision has impacted the future of all these people. For Emma, “the truth screamed at her as often as she’d listen” (page 166).
Reading Shades of Blue by Karen Kingsbury is an opportunity to have a discussion about something often hidden in family closets. Kingsbury describes her book as “Life-Changing Fiction” because the characters represent real life struggles, such as a shameful past. In this story, we walk into past trauma, and seek healing for the characters involved. The book gently uncovers a past trauma, deals with it in a present tense, and demonstrates healing from spiritual pain.
