Jenna’s Cowboy-Book Review

Jenna's CowboyFrom the beautiful cover of Jenna’s Cowboy by Sharon Gillenwater to the Texas setting, this Christian romance book feels like homecoming day. The story begins with the return of Nate, a war hero, to his small town community where he reconnects with Jenna, a girl from his past. Life throws a second chance at a relationship, and both characters are facing an uphill battle from their past. Nate is dealing with PTSD- post traumatic stress disorder while Jenna is nursing a torn heart from her failed marriage.

I found the story slow to read, as the author uses graphic descriptions of a small town community and traditions. If you’ve ever been to a small town parade or homecoming event, you know that not much happens! Just like a small town community, everyone knows everyone else in this book, families are the center of the community, and relationships are everybody’s business.

Several times I found the story to be a bit slow and even boring. One important aspect of the book, however, is the emphasis on war heroes and post traumatic stress disorder. The author writes a comparison of two war generations- Vietnam War and Iraq war, as the older generation mentors the new generation of war heroes. Symptoms of the stress disorder in the story were predictable.

Unfortunately, I am not a huge fan of this book. It was too slow for me, and too predictable. Since the author is popular, and many have enjoyed reading this book, I am giving it an average rating. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher Revell Books.

My Amazon Rating 3/5
