Anything But Normal-Book Review
Have you seen the book Anything But Normal? This latest book written by popular author Melody Carlson reveals the life of Sophie, a high school student with a secret to hide. At the opening of the book, we meet this intelligent teenager as she interacts with her friends with the experiences of a normal teenager. The writing style is energetic, as the main character deals with daily activities of being a high school student, her role as editor and reporter for the school paper, and her possible pregnancy. The author does an excellent job of writing from the viewpoint of Sophie, a teen girl. Sophie is often distracted, confused, overwhelmed and well…emotional. Her character fits that of any teen girl wearing a pair of denim jeans! From PMS to term papers and high school proms…this book has many common interests for teens.
Soon, Sophie begins to realize that she is facing a difficult challenge and worries that she may be pregnant. Sophie faces this possibility by looking at her her world through the eyes of a reporter, observing the people and their behaviors as she considers teen pregnancy. In the book, author Melody Carlson touches on the subject of teen sex, abstinence, birth control, abortion and adoption. No stone is left unturned in this book, as Sophie and her friends face pregnancy from a Christian perspective, a school perspective and a parental perspective.
In this story of teen pregnancy, Sophie is challenged by her own bias towards purity vows, her struggle with her vows of faith, and her relationships with others. These issues are presented with humor, as Sophie herself explains that her humor often saves her from imminent trouble. You’ll want to read Anything But Normal by Melody Carlson, and see how an intelligent and funny girl is handling a teenagers worst fear: pregnancy.
I found the writing style of this book to be entertaining, funny and enjoyable, like many other books written by author Melody Carlson. I’m unsure how parents feel about their teens reading this book, and I suggest they read it first. The author serves as a volunteer for Young Life, ministering to teenagers.
